Weigh-In 2: Good First Week

Scale & Measuring TapeWell, my first week of living this whole thing out is complete. All things considered, I’d say it was pretty good, though it was certainly not an easy week. Then again, I didn’t expect it to be.

On the good side, I had cravings for a variety of foods, including Taco Bell Nachos, Stefano’s Garlic Knots, and Lays Sea Salt and Vinegar Kettle Chips (No wonder I’m fat!) but I was good, and I didn’t give in. I tracked all my food with LIVESTRONG, and my eating habits were all good calorie-wise. I did find that LIVESTRONG was advising me to eat around 2,300 calories a day, but when I did that I’d maintain my weight. When I aimed for 1,800 (500 less calories a day translates on paper to one pound a week) I had significantly better loss results. I’m always feeling “hungry” whether I’m eating 2,300 or 1,800, so I just consider that a psychological habitual-hunger and ignore it.

On the bad side, I did “give in” regarding the area of exercise, but I think it was warranted. I got sick on January 1st, and it took pretty much all of this week to get back up to speed with my normal energy level and appetite. I did not add in the cardio or weight-training that I had hoped for, since there were times that I could barely function let alone pedal a bike. Since cardio didn’t happen last week, it starts today.

Nevertheless, I did say it was a good week. Here’s why: Continue reading

¡Yo quiero Taco Bell!

Taco Bell Fresco Line

Hope you like salsa!

I’ll be honest, this one makes me laugh. Taco Bell has launched an infomercial for their Fresco line of reduced-fat meal options. They call it the Drive Thru Diet, but they are quick to point out that “Drive-Thru-Diet is not a weight-loss program.” Uh-huh. Okay.

Their main spokesperson is a woman named Christine, who lost 54 pounds over the course of two years eating the Fresco line. And just how did she do that? I’ll let Christine explain it: Continue reading

Weigh-In 1: Kill The Embarrassment

Scale & Measuring TapeThe whole point of this blog is that I be as real and straight-shooting as possible about my health. With that in mind, I’m planning to do a weekly weigh-in (usually it will be on Saturdays). Since today is the first day of the journey, it only makes sense that I post my starting weight, measurements.

That being said, I was tempted to be embarrassed, even as I began writing this post. My thoughts headed back to junior high school, as I remembered the harassment I used to get as a much-lighter-yet-still-fat-teenager. However, this isn’t about other people. More than being embarrassed, I’m motivated to take this mission seriously, and do something about my health. So, with that said, here are my stats as I head into my first week as a health nut: Continue reading

The Blueprint

People Blueprint

Yesterday I announced my intention to improve my health and lose weight, all while blogging about it. I’ve appreciated the encouragement I’ve received from friends and family since launching the site. However, it’s obvious that blogging about weight loss alone isn’t going to get the job done. The question, “How are you going to do that?‚” keeps coming up.

Pastor Mark Driscoll recently posted a little quote that I found very fitting:

Just so you know, in 2 days nothing changes, unless you make a plan & execute it. The year changes but if you don’t, you can just photocopy this year.

The bottom line is that without a detailed plan, we are extremely unlikely to succeed in any life-changing endeavor. This is true whether you want to join the “New Year’s Resolution crowd” in making a weight loss goal, want to plan for retirement, or desire to make any number of other lifestyle changes.

I’ve given it quite a bit of thought, and here are the major components of my plan and the blueprint of how I intend to lose weight and experience real health. Continue reading

Time to Get Serious

Len Preaching Advent 09

If you are reading this, it means you are interested in reading about a very specific aspect of my life: my health. (Either that, or you stumbled across this page accidentally, and won’t be back!) I have to be honest: I’ve gone back and forth about “becoming a weight-loss blogger.” The topic is personal. It’s embarrassing. It’s brutal. And I believe writing about it will ultimately help me succeed at reaching the goals I have for a healthy future.

I recently had an epic reality check. The church that I pastor started a video podcast. As a technology geek I was all for it, until I started seeing myself preaching in HD… They say the camera adds 10 lbs; well, there must be about 15 cameras on me, because I’m HUGE. And I hate it.

It isn’t just the weight, though. I’ve been sick and tired of being sick and tired for a long time now. It’s been weight, sleep apnea, arthritis, blood pressure, and a host of other issues. And after years of good intentions, I’ve finally decided that 2010 is [way past] the time to get serious!

My goal now is to experience real health. Not just weight-loss, but a holistic lifestyle of health that includes fitness and nutrition, preventative medical care, Osteopathy, and more. Tomorrow, I will post a rough outline of what the initial components of my plan to experience real health look like. On Friday, I’ll kick off the first formal day on the plan with an initial weigh-in, workout details, and more. I hope you’ll join me!
